The annual selection of Paterson Board of Education officers
Monday night was overshadowed by the return of a long-absent
member and the angry voices of parents, upset about school
administrators and board members who were no-shows at a
weekend training conference.

Andre Sayegh, was named president and Willa Mae Taylor vice
president, completing a role reversal for the two members, who
held opposite positions this past year.

Board member Chauncey Brown, who had not attended a meeting
since Sept. 6, according to meeting minutes, was also present at
John F. Kennedy High School. He said "difficulties" with his job
as a captain at the Paterson Fire Department prevented him from
attending previous meetings and apologized for his absence.
Brown could not be reached for comment Tuesday to further
explain why he was now able to return to school board meetings.
According to meeting minutes, his absences were excused
because of a medical leave.

About 25 parents who attended a weekend training conference for
parents in Somerset hosted by the New Jersey Association of
Parent Coordinators berated school board members and district
administrators for not attending and expressed anger that the
school district paid for 200, rather than 300, Paterson participants.

Budget constraints prevented the district from sending more
parents, according to a March letter obtained by the Herald News
from Schools Superintendent Michael Glascoe to interim Passaic
County Superintendent Robert Gilmartin.
